چکیده
Kobuchi-Philip, Mana. 2010. Indeterminate Numeral Quantifiers, ‘Some’ and ‘Many’ Readings, and Questions in Japanese. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 35, 503-530. The Japanese indeterminate numeral quantifier (WH-CL) can directly combine with a quantificational particle ka or mo, forming, e.g., nan-nin-ka ‘what-CLperson-KA’ or nan-nin-mo ‘what-CLperson-MO’. This paper focuses on the empirical evidence that the former gives rise to a ‘some’ reading while the latter a ‘many’ reading, and discusses, from semantic and pragmatic perspectives, how these readings are formally derived. Semantically, we assume, in accord with Hamblin (1973), that the indeterminate numeral quantifier (NQ) is a set of alternatives. Following Jayaseelan (2001), ka is treated as a disjunction operator that takes a set of alternatives and produces a disjunction of it. Adopting Shimoyama’s direct restrictor view of indeterminate phrase quantification, we derive the ‘some’ reading of the indeterminate NQ-ka. In contrast, the ‘many’ reading of an indeterminate NQ-mo is attributed to the pragmatics of mo, which triggers a presupposition like English even (Karttunen and Peters 1979). (Utrecht University)

Decomposing Questions
The primary proposal of this thesis that in questions, a “Q” morpheme must undergo syntactic movement from a clause-internal position to a clause-peripheral position. Throughout this thesis, we develop a syntactic analysis and a semantic formalism for questions that accounts for the facts observed in wh-in-situ languages (focusing mainly on Japanese, Sinhala, Shuri Okinawan, and premodern Japan...

Background and Aims: Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is spreading rapidly among the people worldwide. Infection with this virus leads to immune suppression and finally acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Early HIV detection is dependent on antibody screening against virus by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Some confirmatory tests such as Western Blot and Recombinant Immunobl...

متن کاملA Focus-based Approach to Scope Ambiguity in Japanese
This paper puts forward an analysis of scope interactions between Japanese adverbial quantifiers like mainichi 'everyday' and tokidoki 'sometimes' and a negative morpheme nai 'not' on the basis of Aocus)-structures. In this analysis, three f-structures are assigned to a sentence with an adverbial quantifier and a negative morpheme. One of them represents a negation-wide reading, and the other t...
متن کاملuniversal(-Iike) quantifiers in Japanese
In Japanese a certain kind of phrase, which Kuroda (1965) calls "indetenninate", can function as a wh-phrase, existential quantifier or universal quantifier depending on context and the use of particles. I argue that "indetenninates" are contrastive-focused, and that the meanings of existential and universal quantifiers are made of (in)finite application of disjunction ("ka") and conjunction ("...
